Fresh Listen: Talib Kweli - "Palookas"

Talib Kweli brings yet another lyrical assault on the song "Palookas," released yesterday. The track has a beat that you can't help but bob your head to. "Palookas" was produced by Marco Polo (and no not the game we love to play in the pool during summer).

Fresh Video: Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr - "Nothing But Our Love"

I heard  about Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr awhile back. I read an article about their set at CMJ. How they decided to start the set by covering the Beach Boys song "God Only Knows," one of the most critically praised songs of all-time, and did a damn good job of it.  How they had a knack for combining the sounds of 60's folk and rock (the Beatles) with those of minimalist electronica (Postal Service). And how they wrote really good songs.

Fresh New Listen: Iron & Wine - "Walking Far From Home"

Iron & Wine (Samuel Beam) returns with his new single, "Walking Far From Home," which he now has streaming on his MySpace. The CD single was released on Black Friday along with a special edition Record Store Day Black Friday 12" vinyl.

News: System of a Down Returns

After a 4 year hiatus, System of a Down have announced that they will be performing together once again in 2011. Although the announcement was brief and made no real indication of a new record, fans will be happy to hear their favorite progressive-rock band play live again.

Fresh Video: Kid Cudi - "Mojo's So Dope"

Kid Cudi clearly likes Marijuana. I think it is safe to say he probably voted yes on Proposition 19, but hey, the guy makes some damn good music.

Download: Chiodos - "Caves"

Chiodos became one of the biggest post-hardcore/rock bands between 2005-2008. Their second album would reach number 5 on the Billboard. Then in 2009, the lead singer and main force of Chiodos, Craig Owens, was basically "let go" of his duties and left many wondering what now?

Artist: Blakroc

What happens when you combine blues-rock with hip-hop and R&B? Well, you get the rap-rock collaboration album developed by Ohio band The Black Keys. This album recently hit the one year release anniversary (Nov 27) and at this point I still listen to the album.

Fresh Listen: Kid Ink - "Take Over the World"

The new kid on the block, Kid Ink, released his first major mixtape Crash Landing earlier this month. While he had released a few songs before, he found himself finally getting his name around the hip-hop world more. Hitting almost 30k downloads in just over 2 weeks on hotnewhiphop is pretty impressive.

Artist: Lerix

Courtesy of I AM PR Agency

Straight out of Brooklyn, NY comes a new rapper, Lerix, with a flow comparable to Lupe Fiasco. Since discovering hip-hop at a young age, Lerix has found himself obsessed with music. Throughout his high school days he would continue to write rhymes and would join groups with friends, perfecting his craft.

Fresh Listen: Lil' Kim "Black Friday" (Nicki Minaj Diss)

Ah what is hip-hop without a good old diss song? I never really liked Lil' Kim or Nicki Minaj, but Kim honestly wiped the floor with Nicki Minaj in this song. The diss actually shows that Lil' Kim has some rhyming skills. Check it out below, what do you think?

Fresh Video: Big Sean "Too Fake" ft. Chiddy Bang

This video came out at the beginning of the month, but it is such a good song. The beat is just awesome and the fact that Chiddy Bang is a part of this makes it perfect. The song samples the band Hockey.

Listen: Crystal Castles - "Not In Love" ft. Robert Smith

Crystal Castles - the electro-punk-pop (whatever you want to call them) duo from Toronto, Ontario - now two albums into their indie music career and they seem to be improving with each release.  Their 2008 debut album received a lot of critical praise and gained them a steady cult following with its sometimes chaotic, sometimes moody (always eccentric), dance-pop music.  And their 2010 follow-up went for a more accessible and polished version of the same sound.

Artist: White House Band

Photo courtesy of I AM PR Agency
I was recently contacted about a band from Brooklyn, NY, White House Band. After reading the description about what genre(s) they are I knew I had to listen. The guys of White House Band combine a few genres including: Rap, Blues, and Hard Rock. While The Roots may come to mind, these guys have their own sound and emphasize heavier guitars.

Fresh Download: Wiz Khalifa - "Real Estate"

Wiz Khalifa has probably one of the biggest underground followings to date. His new songs end up with thousands of plays instantly on any hip-hop site and he sells-out every show he performs, or close to it.

Artist: Settle

I always enjoy bands that tend to mix up their songs and mash more than one genre of music together. It is like opening up presents Christmas morning, not knowing what will come next.  This is what Epitaph's Settle does very well. One moment they are sounding  like Jimmy Eat World, then dance-rock, and will then to top it off, add a splash of indie. Although they do not have an exact "genre-identity" it is what makes Settle so fun, especially on the first listen when you are not sure what to expect.

Artist: This Time Next Year

Bringing some fresh pop-punk right to your face comes Equal Vision Records, This Time Next Year. Taking notes from veterans Blink-182 and New Found Glory, the guys add their own sound while rejuvenating the explosion of of pop-punk bands from the late 90's to early 2000's. While many thought pop-punk had become crowded and died, it has started to pick-up again.

Fresh Download: Lloyd Banks - "Where I'm At" ft. Eminem

Lloyd Banks is having a pretty good year. Seeing decent success on his singles, "Beamer, Benz, or Bentley," Any Girl" ft. Lloyd," and "Start It Up" ft. Swizz Beatz, Kanye West, Ryan Leslie, and Fabolous. Banks is showing the hip hop world that 50 Cent is not the only G-Unit member that can make some hits.

Fresh Release: Circa Survive - Appendage

Circa Survive is releasing a new EP, Appendage, on November 30. This comes after their successful third album, Blue Sky Noise, debuted back in April (it would later peak at number 11 on the Billboard charts not long after its release).

Artist: Rebelution

Rebelution is one of those bands, that after listening to, you can not help but feel relaxed. Not only that, but you end up knowing all the words. This is what probably attracted me to their music, it is so catchy an soothing. The guys of Rebelution come from California and are straight-up good fashion reggae. There is no better way to describe their sound.

Fresh Listen: Kanye West & Jay-Z -"That's My Bitch" ft. La Roux

Yes folks, the man you love to hate is back. No, I am not talking about is new album that dropped today. Kanye has another little project in the works. He is working with Jay-Z on a collab effort, due to come out in 2011. So far it is promising to have plenty of guest appearances. Lyrically this song is near flawless and is perfect with this beat.

Fresh Listen: August Burns Red - "Little Drummer Boy"

What better way to get in the Christmas spirit than to listen to "Little Drummer Boy" covered by a metalcore band? While I despise Christmas music, (Probably due to the holiday songs starting right after Halloween in every department store) I actually enjoy what August Burns Red did here.

Fresh Listen: T.I. - "Welcome to the World" ft. Kanye West & Kid Cudi

Although T.I. may be sitting in jail for the next 11 months, this will not stop the release of new tracks, nor will it stop the much anticipated success of his new album.

Fresh Listen: Cage the Elephant - "Shake Me Down"

Cage the Elephant is back with a brand new single, "Shake Me Down." Fans of their debut an popular songs, "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked" and "Back Against the Wall" should also enjoy this track. The members of Cage the Elephant show they still have great more rock songs in their arsenal, and will not be categorized in a sophomore slump, like many others. "Shake Me Down" is now available on iTunes and is already getting favorable responses. Listen below and watch the unofficial video below.

Fresh Video: Travis Barker - "Carry It" ft. RZA, Raekwon, and Tom Morello

Travis Barker has one hell of a career. Becoming part of Blink-182 back in the late 90's which would later dominate the music world in the early 2000's, having his own reality show, surviving a plane crash with now deceased DJ AM, all the while becoming a YouTube sensation drumming and remixing popular rap songs.

Artist: The Last Royals

The Last Royals comprise of Eric James (vocals, synth, guitar) and Mason Ingram (drums, percussion, samples). The guys came together in Spring 2010 and since have gone to release their first EP on Ooh La La Records. Combining indie and pop, they create some unique songs with an upbeat feel.

Fresh Listen: Fabolous - "You Be Killin' Em"

Fabolous seems to be all over the place. Working with some of the biggest artists in Rap and R&B, while releasing some new material of his own. Some may remember when he first debuted "Can't Deny It" and "Young'n (Holla Back) way back in 2001.

Fresh Listen: Talib Kweli - "Cold Rain"

It has been a few years since Talib Kweli has had some new material. Now representing his own label, Kweli is back with his new single, "Cold Rain." Check this track, it is gold. He is sounding more like the Talib Kweli that the hip-hop game has been missing.

Fresh Download: Kanye West - "See Me Now" ft. Beyonce, Charlie Wilson, Big Sean

Another decent track from Kanye West. The song features Big Sean, who I am really starting to like the more I hear him. Listen and download below.

New Video: Arcade Fire - "The Suburbs" Directed by Spike Jonze

Director Spike Jonze has teamed up with Canadian indie-rockers, Arcade Fire, to create their new music video for "The Suburbs." Filmed in Austin, Texas, the video follows a group of teens in the suburbs. The video works well with this great song and has some pretty intense moments.

Fresh Video: B.o.B. - "Don't Let Me Fall"

I remember first discovering B.O.B back in 2007 late 2008. He was fairly young and was basically unheard of. He had some really catchy songs though, like "Mellow Fellow" and "I'll Be in the Sky." At the time, I never would have guessed how big in the mainstream he would get.

Fresh Listen: Bruno Mars - "Liquor Store Blues" ft. Damian Marley

It is hard these days to not hear the name Bruno Mars. The guy exploded into the music scene being featured in some big summer hits that included: B.O.B's "Nothin' On You" and Travie McCoy's, "Billionaire." Now Bruno is taking the radios by storm with his debut, Doo-Wops & Hooligans.

Artist: Mike Posner

Mike Posner's musical journey is a pretty incredible feat. He attended Duke University and recorded a mixtape in his dorm with the help of DJ Benzi and Don Cannon. The mixtape, A Matter of Time, would drop in spring 2009. By summer, his mixtape grew so much in popularity that he scored a deal with J Records in July.

Fresh Listen: Papoose - "Twenty"

While this song is all about Mary Jane, Papoose's lyrics are on point. He is arguably the most lyrical underground rapper out there. All his stuff is bananas, ever hear of "Alphabetical Slaughter?" The guy has a vocabulary like no other. Even if you don't like the lyrics of "Twenty", the beat and production are pretty crazy.

Fresh New Video: Gorillaz - "Doncamatic"

I always had a fondness for the Gorillaz. I still listen to their debut some 9 years later. It is really incredible how Damon Albarn’s project remains fresh after all these years. It also shows what a talented producer, singer, and songwriter can accomplish.

Fresh Music Video: My Chemical Romance -"Na Na Na"

My Chemical Romance is one interesting band. Not sure if that is good or bad. I was never quite sure what I exactly thought of them, still don't. I could never really got into their Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge album, where everyone else seemed to embrace. It was just something I had a hard time getting into.

Fresh Listen: Dr. Dre - "Kush" ft. Snoop Dogg & Akon

Ah, remember Dr. Dre when he left N.W.A. and pursued his solo career? It started with The Chronic, which was a great album. His fans would then wait about 7 years for his follow-up 2001. Since that sophomore release, Dr. Dre has again let fans wondering when his next album will finally come out.

Fresh Listen: Four Year Strong - "Tonight We Feel Alive (On A Saturday)"

Four Year Strong bring their in your face pop/punk with a splash of hardcore to the next level with this album, released last spring. They have continued to prove they can create some catchy, yet head-banging anthems. Check out, "Tonight We Feel Alive (On A Saturday)," below.

Artist: City & Colour

Sometimes Dallas Green is the energetic, melodic singer/guitar player for post-hardcore band Alexisonfire, and other times he shows his mellow acoustic side. City & Colour has been Dallas Green's other project for some years, and for those of you who have missed out, now is the time to catch up.

Fresh Download: Chiddy Bang - The Swelly Express/Air Swell

Both mixtapes by the Philly duo are a must have for any music fans library. Combining the sampling of indieand alternative songs with his own unique beats, Noah "Xaphoon Jones" Beresin creates some of the most innovative arrangements you'll hear today. Add Chidera "Chiddy" Anamege lyrical genius to Xaphoon's refreshing beats, and you have Chiddy Bang.

Fresh Download: Jay Electronica - Shiny Suit Theory

Jay Electronica is dope. End of story. Check out any of his tracks and listen to the lyrics, they are pretty intense and you almost have to rewind to catch everything he says.

Artist to Watch: The Brightlife

The boys of The Brightlife are putting East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania on the map. The guys combine catchy guitar riffs accompanied by pop influences. Their lyrics are infectious and easily become sing-along anthems for any fan of the pop/rock genre.

Fresh Listen: The Cool Kids - Big Talk

The Cool Kids, comprised of Mikey Rocks and Chuck Inglish are back with their alternative hip-hop. The duo made a name for themselves awhile back during a 2007 Rhapsody commercial and since then they have gotten a lot of exposure.

Fresh Download: Kanye West - Chain Heavy

This track features Talib Kweli and Consequence rapping over a Q-Tip produced beat. Love him or hate him, you can not deny the talent that Kanye West has. He is, quite possibly, the best producer turned rapper to hit the hip-hop game.

Artist: Dirty Heads

The Dirty Heads fuse hip-hop, reggae, and rock all in one. I remember about a year ago being introduced to these guys, and thinking about how huge they could become. Well, now they seem to have reached that success that I thought they would hit.

Fresh Listen: J.Cole - Higher

J. Cole has been releasing some really good tracks lately. His vocals and rhymes are undeniable. Listen and download below.

Fresh Listen: American Bang - Wild and Young

Straight out of Nashville, Tennessee comes the fresh southern rock of American Bang. While this song has made its rounds through radio stations in the last few months, the band has not quite caught on as much as they deserve. The first single, "Wild and Young" retains that youthful feel.

Artist: Bad Rabbits

Hailing from Boston, the Bad Rabbits are bringing their combination of R&B, Pop, and even some Soul to your ears. The guys of Bad Rabbits are different from anything really out there right now, and are starting to gain some much deserved attention.

Fresh Download: Mac Miller - Kids

Pennsylvania has been exploding in the rap scene, it is actually pretty ridiculous. On the east side from Philly there is artists like: Meek Mill, Young Chris, Cassidy, Chiddy Bang, and Gille Da Kid. The west side of Pennsylvania had to step it up. First music fans get Wiz Khalifa and now a 18 year old protege.

Fresh Song of the Day: Kid Ink - Gary Payton

Be on the lookout for Kid Ink. He teams up with DJ Ill Will and DJ Rockstar to bring you Crash Landing. You can check out his track, "Gary Payton" below.

What do you think? Fresh?

New Release: A Day To Remember

It is safe to say that within the last year or so, A Day To Remember has become one of the biggest bands on the planet. Selling out venues all over the world and playing thousands of shows. Since their debut in 2005, the Ocala, Florida band has generated plenty of buzz. They also leave countless critics and fans wondering what exact genre they are.
