Artist: Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk

Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk may just be the funkiest band you've ever heard. Formed in 2003 in New Orleans by former Rolling Stones and Neville Brothers' keyboardist Ivan Neville, these guys have been touring pretty much nonstop, spreading their funk to festivals, venues, and funkiteers across the country. What separates Dumpstaphunk from their funky bretheren is their unique lineup: guitar, drums, keys, and TWO BASSES, which means double the funk. I had the opportunity to see them open up for Galactic at the Fillmore in Denver this past weekend, and they absolutely killed it.

Hitting the stage around 8:30, very early in concert time, Dumpstaphunk gave crowd that was still trickling in a treat. They seriously brought it! I knew that later on in the night, the place was assuredly going to get packed, but I looked around and saw every single person in the crowd dancing around with huge smiles as they enjoyed the space that Dumpstaphunk's early timeslot awarded them. Dumpstaphunk's set lasted about an hour of straight up, dirty funk, featuring a some vocals from the legendary Cyril Neville. Their set was an absolute blast.

Dumpstaphunk played a lot of material off their newest album Everybody Wants Sum, which features the band going off for twelve songs of super tight grooves, straight out of the Crescent City, the hottest of which is the instrumental "Paper Chasing Britney." The band is so in the pocket, it's impossible to not groove along. You can download Everybody Wants Sum off their bandcamp. Check out "Paper Chasing Britney" below:

Dumpstaphunk's CD is great, but nothing compares to one of their lives shows. They can start up slow, and deliberately build up each jam to a peak. Each member of the band is capable of taking control, and they all have the ability to absolutely shred. Keep an eye out for Ivan Neville himself on keys and bassist/guitarist Tony Hall. Both of these guys have the capability to melt some faces. Check out this live recording:

To find out the next time Dumpstaphunk is coming to a city near you, check the tour dates on their website. In the meantime, follow them on Facebook and limber up, so you're ready to get down the next time you get a chance to see them.

Fresh?
