Last Thursday experimental pop artist and member of Animal Collective, Panda Bear, released the final single in his series of singles leading up to his new album, Tomboy. Panda has been releasing a couple tracks from the album, due out April 12, each month as single versions that vary from the album versions.
I'm guessing that this is also the case with new single "Surfer's Hymn", which is b-sided by a remix of the track by UK producer Actress. I can't confirm if the new single varies from the album version of the song though; you'll just have to buy the album to find out.
Also released last week was another Panda track that came from a benefit Animal Collective did with apparel company Keep for the Socorro Island Conservation Fund. For the benefit, each of the four members of AC designed his own shoe to be sold with a cassette tape that features an unreleased track from each member. Panda Bear's track, "The Preakness", is the only track from the tape to be revealed so far.
"Surfer's Hymn" is an appropriately titled upbeat jam that begins and ends with the sound of waves crashing. It seems to be one of the only tracks on Tomboy that has that positive and joyous vibe that Panda had on his last album, Person Pitch. "The Preakness" is a little less upbeat, but sounds much more like vintage Panda Bear. Listen to both new tracks below. You can also check out the Actress remix of "Surfer's Hymn" by clicking here.
