Throwback Album: Weezer - Pinkerton

Weezer has become on the biggest acts in mainstream alternative rock/power pop, although now they may have crossed over more to a complete pop sound. Yet, they still, album after album, continue to create some of the catchiest songs you'll ever hear. They have tons of singles, all which did phenomenal on the charts. I'm a big fan of Weezer's earlier albums, and 1996's Pinkerton is one of them.

So far this is the oldest throwback album I've talked about, but it is one CD that really never gets old. Their previous debut album dubbed, The Blue Album, had the alt and power pop sound that threw them into the limelight, but Pinkerton changed directions. It went to a darker edge and a far more personal connection in the songwriting. At the time, people seemed to not like it and it technically was a commericial failure. Only a few years down the line would people realize how amazing this album was.

I think the darker sound is what intially through listeners off, especially those who were expecting more tunes like "Buddy Holly" and "Undone - The Sweater Song." For me though, I love when albums tend to vary somewhat or explore new regions, and that is what Pinkerton is all about. I think most of the critics of the album who panned it back then are now eating their words as this is one influential album. If you do not have this album in your collection, I recommend purchasing it here.

Stand out tracks include: "Tired of Sex," "Across the Sea," "El Scorcho," "Pink Triangle," and "The Good Life."

Fresh?
