If you've been on this blog, you know I have a pretty broad range of music tastes. Generally, I post more indie and hip hop, but am no way afraid to post other types of music. I was pleasantly surprised by this entry for Unsigned Friday just on the opening of this artists EP. Had a very haunting, but psychedelic feel. This is some cool, honest music. Learn about Silver Wren below.
Who: Ross, 20 year old songwriter, producer. I have an eclectic past with music, ranging from playing electric-guitar for the Hip Hop artist Anonymous in his live shows in Tampa, I also played bass-guitar for the funk-metal band Suggestion as a masked alien in a trench coat during my high school years, which was without saying, interesting. During this time I wrote and recorded acoustic music under the influence of artists such as Sufjan Stevens, Elliott Smith, and Animal Collective. I decided to start the psych-folk project Silver Wren to try and explore the fantastical through music. I try not to take myself too seriously, but I am vaguely serious about my music.
What: Songs mostly written from acoustic guitar, developed through other instruments, electronic effects into a sound that is lyrical, melody-driven. Often the songs I write are said to have darker undertones, but really, I try and create optimism in the exchange between major/minor shifts in mood, key.
Why: I want to try and capture small moments, melodies that express something everyone can relate and drift through.
Where: Gainesville, Florida where I attend university and make passable curries.
When: I started Silver Wren in March, 2011. I released the first EP for the project titled "Ways to Wake" in June 2011. I will release a sister EP titled "Window in the Wreath" this Thursday (August 11th)
Biggest Moment/Accomplishment: Musically speaking, the biggest moment for me was first listening all the way through Sufjan Steven's album "Illinois" and realizing that music wasn't just for entertainment. That it had the potential to describe and dramatize "anything" really made it an addiction.
