I can't do post-hardcore anymore ... I just can't. I listened to a lot of it in high school, I think because my hormones and teenage angst told me it was powerful and transcendent. Now, I listen to it and I think it sounds ridiculous. But, there are those few bands of that style that were really unique and I can still get into them on occasion. They are bands like Circa Survive or Poison The Well or mewithoutYou. Still I don't actively seek out new PH bands anymore. I lost faith in the genre because I never heard anything that lyrically or creatively measured up to the intensity of the music.
Then, I randomly stumbled across this band called La Dispute. Some of my friends tried to get me to listen to their first album a year or so ago and I couldn't get into it. I was impressed by their deep, poetic lyrics and they did have more emotional force than I was used to hearing, but I still felt they were lacking creatively and I didn't identify with the lyrics enough to overlook that. However, I just happened to see a very positive review of their new album so I decided to give one of their new songs, "King Park", a listen ... it was one of the most powerful songs I've ever heard. This song grabbed my by the neck and pulled me into this heart-wrenching story in a way that I never expected. I was left speechless. I thought about it all day. Needless to say this isn't the typical kind of song I would post on here. It isn't a fun listen; it's heavy, emotional stuff. But, I think everyone should listen to it. This is the only post-hardcore song I've heard where the lyrics are more raw than the music behind it--and it's some pretty raw music. Sorry to write a novel about it, but this needs to be shared. Listen to "King Park" below, and read the lyrics in the video along with it for full effect.
