I, like many of you out there, had nothing better to do Sunday night but watch the Grammy awards. The awards usually go to the same few artists/bands or albums throughout the night and plenty of really good music can get overlooked. But, I'm not a part of the esteem council and associations, so my opinion means nothing. I usually tune in just to see some performances and how well singers do and for the most part, they almost all sounded great (Although I'm not sure what the hell I watched when Nicki Minaj performed). After the awards were over I took to Twitter and to my astonishment, found that a lot of these kids were not only asking who Bonnie Bear was (not a big surprise, but seriously it's Bon Iver), but who Sir Paul McCartney was. PAUL McCARTNEY. Seriously? Like, these kids are joking right?
I'm only 24 years old, so I was not around when The Beatles took over America in the 60's with their music, but I knew who The Beatles and most of members names by the time I was 10. This is also coming from someone who does not listen to The Beatles or really likes their music. Now, before you freak out at that statement, I respect them as musicians and what they have done for pop/rock music. I would have assumed basically everyone in America would know Paul McCartney because he has maintained solo success besides The Beatles, even to this day. Even as a kid on the radio you would come across The Beatles, maybe his Wings music, or his solo stuff -- it's played to this day and really unavoidable at this point.
I decided not to post a lot of the Twitter images of people asking who he was because there were too many and you'd probably be inclined to tweet them mean things, which they most likely deserve. I think what pissed me off too is, kids know how computers work by now, if you really do not know who someone is, Google is your friend. Problem solved. But even so, these kids need a musical education, it's really sad that Lil' B has more power to be remembered for his awful raps than someone with 50+ years of making music that changed the world.
I do not care if you do not like his music or listen to it, like I've mentioned before, I do not. But damn, you better respect it and at least be able to recognize it before the state of music becomes complete shit. If you did watch the Grammy's, Foo Fighter's front man Dave Grohl said it right about the importance of music and creating it, then no sooner he said that they backdrop LMFAO.While some of LMFAO's music is sometimes slightly amusing, it is also what ruins music and why kids have no idea who Paul McCartney is.
Rant over.

Typical white person bullshit directed towards kids (most of them of color) who don't happen to share the dominant culture's love of rock and folk. Why the frack aren't you glad that your favorite genre of music won that night, and not be a sourpuss about it? Instead, you're going to bash a bunch of kids for not sharing your love and respect of Paul McCartney (especially considering how overexposed, over-hyped AND overplayed the Beatles are now becoming-and this from a fellow fan of the Fab Four who's also black.)
Why should they care about Paul, especially when their parents probably didn't expose them to the Beatles/Paul McCartney when they were younger (and also because unlike you and a lot of people, they are living in the PRESENT and NOT the PAST)? They are living NOW, experiencing what goes on NOW, and aren't infected with misguided and misplaces nostalgia for the past like most of you. They sure as frack don't deserve your score for not being overly respectful of an older white singer simply because he was a big deal for most of the 20th century-especially when you most likely don't care, and detest, their favorite type of music.
I think that you, and everybody else who's a fan of the Beatles and are caught up in the new popularity of the Beatles (way, way too much, I think) need to get a better perspective on the past, nostalgia and whatever privilege you've got, and this article will shed some light: Nostalgia-A Sport For The Privileged (http://www.racialicious.com/2009/06/15/nostalgia-a-sport-for-the-privileged/#13300675970452&{"message":false,"status":"educate user"}).
You are a moron. I clearly stated numerous times that I am not a Beatles fan nor do I listen to the Beatles, but I damn sure know who they are. Instead of pulling the race card, maybe educate yourself a little. I know a lot of different races and ages who know who he is, so your argument is invalid.
No one is being a "sour puss" nor do I care that he won, sorry I think it is sad that one of the biggest names in music history can not be recognized by a lot of youth. Clearly I'm not living in the past, as all the music I post is in the present.
I find it sad that you focus on race numerous times and think I detest this generations music, yet if you actually read anything I post, I have numerous genres posted all the time, and not from the past. You clearly read wayyyy too much into it, had an opinion about me and the site before actually ever reading anything else, and clearly cannot read since I never once said I was a Beatles fan. Way to be bud, way to be.
