Joe – "I’d Rather Have Love" (XXYYXX Remix)

XXYYXX remixes Joe

While we don't get too many remixes from Florida producer XXYYXX, the young talent returned with an updated version of Joe's "I'd Rather Have Love." He gives the R&B single a bit of a twist, altering the vocal effects and layering in some excellent drums that turn the song into a more upbeat trap/ dance infused beat. It still has that smooth baby-making vibe to it, but with more energy. Love what XXYYXX did here on this and I'm sure you will too. Stream it below.

The Neighbourhood ft. Casey Veggies & 100s – “Jealou$y”

The Neighbourhood featuring Casey Veggies & 100s

For some reason, the dark-pop music that The Neighbourhood creates just makes sense to have some hip hop mixed in. They dabble in that with a new song called "Jealou$y" featuring Casey Veggies and 100s, who spit over a bit of a jazz influenced alternative production. This idea all came together earlier in the year when the band announced a mixtape #000000 & #FFFFFF, which will be out very soon. Stream the jam below.

Sam Smith - "Stay With Me" (Black Space Remix)

Stay With Me Black Space Remix

Just in time for the beginning of Summer 2014 comes Black Space's remix of Sam Smith's, "Stay With Me."  I feel like a lot of producers are recently going for more of a Tropical House kind of sound. Black Space does a great job of adding an array of rich synths and mallets complimenting the ballad. This combined with Smith's soulful vocals makes for one great Summer track.

Bleachers – “I Wanna Get Better” (RAC Mix)

RAC mix of Bleachers

If you do not know the incredible sounds of RAC, it's time to get acquainted. The remix king has also ventured into originals, proving his musical abilities are far more than just remixes. However, his latest is a mix of the indie/alt jam, "I Wanna Get Better" from the band Bleachers. This one keeps the catchy chorus of the original and those alternative sounds, but gives it a bit more upbeat dance elements. Usually what RAC does, but each time he finds a way to make each new mix exciting to listen to. Get ready to turn this one up pretty loud, it's a jam.

The latest is from Noah Breakfast of Say Lou Lou's track "Everything We Touch." Here, the Philly native slowed down the Swedish duo's track and gave it a complete mellow vibe. Vanessa Elisha – "Ocean"

New song from Vanessa Elisha called Ocean

Australian R&B singer Vanessa Elisha is not a new name to the blog and she will continue to have support with us, especially with solid music like "Ocean." I haven't been the only one to take notice to her as other people in the industry are recognizing her talents and creating some more buzz. Again, her sultry vocals are a nice match to a chill beat, which is less hazy than her previous releases. Yet, J-Louis created a nice atmosphere for her and she continues to shine. Banks - "Drowning"

Banks releases a song called Drowning

California singer Banks has one of the more unique sounds in alternative/electronic music, where I usually can tell right away when a song his hers. Before her debut album Goddess is released in September, she released another tune called "Drowning." Once again, we get a bit darker side of her but over an incredibly cool instrumental. I actually feel a bit of a Lana Del Rey vibe in this one, but it's still entirely Banks' sound here. This might be my favorite tune to date from her.

Holograms of Deceased Artists: Good or Bad?

Michael Jackson Billboard Awards Hologram

This might be my first feature piece in what feels like a year, but a few months have gone by since I've written one. My schedule has gotten a bit crazy right now, as I'm sure you guys who do still visit here have noticed a decrease in posts. But after last night and watching the Michael Jackson hologram on the Billboard Music Awards, I felt like I had enough thoughts to talk about this.

The first time I remember hearing about some hologram performance was when Tupac was brought back at Coachella back in 2012. I have to admit at first I was sort of in awe of what I was watching. It was so lifelike with the movements and actual look of the hologram. Technology is an unbelievable thing, but it is also pretty fucking unsettling. While I appreciate that the industry is trying show respect to the deceased artists, I can't help but just feel awkward as these "performances" come to an end. I feel like many people have that inital "wow" feeling, but as it continues you sort take it all in and wonder what you just watched.

To me, it feels like a giant scam. When it was announced about a possible tour with a Tupac hologram I was instantly pissed. To me, it is a way for the publishers, labels, rights holders, whoever is in control of the artists legacy to continue cashing in. Do you really want this to continue the legacy and show respect or is it just a way to fill your pockets? It also made me step back and wonder, "Would Tupac or Michael Jackson really be pumped about this?" We obviously never will know that answer, but it just felt weird. Luckily, that supposed tour hasn't come to fruition yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if it does. Especially a Michael Jackson one, as the King of Pop is probably the biggest revenue generator and most likely will continue to be for a long time. In a way, it's almost disrespectful to the human being aspect of these artists that brought music to the masses. I'm not even offended by the holograms, it really just leaves an awkward feeling in my stomach as a music fan.

It also makes you wonder, is this the future? Even after many icons are long gone, will this be how the music industry pushes concerts to live on? Will bands like Rolling Stones, The Who, The Beatles, etc. become the next holograms? There has to be limit and I would hate to see this out of control. At the same time, for younger generations in the future, it could be an interesting experience to almost relive what their parents or grandparents saw. But really, is that the way to go about it?

There are a lot of questions that need to be thought about and answered in the music industry, if it's not being discussed already. Watching the MJ performance last night left a ton of different feelings about it, both positive and negative. It's entertaining, creepy, interesting, awkward, and a whole lot more. Not sure what the future of this holds, but I really hope this doesn't become a common trend when we lose some of the world's greatest music icons.

What do you think?

Fossil Collective - "Under My Arrest" (Oli Slack Remix)

Oli Slack remixes Fossil Collective

If you desire some smooth and relaxing alt/folk music, Fossil Collective should be one of your go to bands. When I saw that Oli Slack remixed the bands "Under My Arrest" I honestly was not sure what to expect. I can't really imagine folk music working to great in the remix game,  but the Brighton producer flipped the song into a chill and glitchy beach track. It works so well and the touch that Oli brought to this was just right. Stream and download below.

Lupe Fiasco – "Mission"

Lupe Fiasco new song Mission

It's been relatively quiet from Chicago rapper Lupe Fiasco, but he has returned with a song called "Mission," which will be on his upcoming album, Tetsuo & Youth. Yet, this song also serves as an empowerment to cancer survivors, as Lupe recently joined Stand Up To Cancer as an ambassador. Produced by Soundz and Duke Da Monsta, we hear the song start off with some messages from cancer survivors and people currently battling diseases. From there, Fiasco chimes in with his flow and spreads a positive message. While I'm in full support of the message, the song itself doesn't retain a ton of replay value, but certainly looking forward to more music over the next few weeks.

Now this one from DJ Sliink and Big O is endorsed by the funk duo, who released this on their official Soundcloud. Not only has his music become more sophisticated, but his fanbase has continue to develop. He's giving fans plenty of great free music, performance videos, and some drunk covers (which were always a great time). Plus, Jhameel has this friendly aura about him that makes it hard not to show some support to him. And now folks, after 2 years of work, Jhameel's album Lion's Den is here.

This is why their submission, "90s Music" by electropop artist, Kimbra, is this the College Radio Pick of the Week. Buckwild took on Big L's track " Casualties Of A Dice Game," which was off his album, The Big Picture. The rapid flow and smooth lyrics are perfectly intact, just over a slightly updated beat that will get your head bobbin' along. Stream below.

Thief – “Cry Me A River” (Justin Timberlake Cover)

Justin Timberlake cover by Thief

I can say I enjoy a good cover every now and then, which Thief has delivered with his "Cry Me A River" version. Now, Justin Timberlake already does great things for pop music, but the Sydney based crooner brought his own flavor to this. The production is a bit more minimalistic in spots with a tropical steel drum element, but it makes you focus on the R&B and pop vocals. What is also cool about this cover is it's not just a direct cover, Thief owns it and makes it his own while still doing JT justice. Stream below.

COLLEGE RADIO PICK OF THE WEEK - ONLYREAL

This week's pick is from our friends at WPSC Brave New Radio out of William Paterson University. Their submission, "Get It On", by OnlyReal is the perfect summer jam. Music Director, Eric Dolan, perfectly sums up why this track is such a strong submission.
Carefully and confidently blending the spaced out guitar of Mac Demarco with the swaggering accent of King Krule, this beachy-brit-hop bounces along ultimately to a beat entirely unique. Brimming with clever lyrics and delectable hooks, this song, and the entire Cadillac Girl EP, revel in a sort of 2014 beach rock meets 90s hip hop glaze, resulting in a deeply enjoyable debut.
Stream below and check out the entire album.

Stream Gallant's Zebra EP in Full

Stream Gallant's Zebra Ep

Los Angeles crooner Gallant has been featured on here a few times with his alt/R&B jams and now we have his Zebra EP streaming in full. The previously heard tunes are featured on this, but there are a few others that we have yet to hear. Gallant's vocals are brilliant and he perfectly fits over the solid backdrops that Felix Snow and Math Times Joy create.

Gallant states: "Most of the lyrics and themes came from pages of old journals and voice notes…feelings of guilt and loneliness… admission of regret and anxiety… all the stuff that’s still difficult for me to talk about in the real world but easy to let bleed out on paper…. or scream into a mic in a dark, soundproofed room. I really hope each track can stand on it’s own but Manhattan, Jupiter Grayscale and Sienna are probably the most personal."

Earl Sweatshirt Releases Two New Tracks

New tracks from Earl Sweatshirt

A few hours ago Odd Future member Earl Sweatshirt took to his Twitter urging fans to look up a particular name on Soundcloud. When you do that, it leads to two previously unheard songs, one featuring Mac Miller and the other with Vince Staples. Both tracks have interesting names, but regadless of that, the tracks are pretty good. Stream them below.

Pacific Air - "Float" (Mountain Of Youth Remix)

Mountain of Youth remix of Pacific Air

There always great remixes coming out and today I've had plenty come my way that I had to share. The latest his an indie/house remix of Pacific Air's tune "Float" by Mountain of Youth. I don't really know too much about them, but the email was short, sweet, and the remix was really well done. It's catchy and has a hell of a good groove to it. You can stream and download for free below.
