G-Eazy Released Two New Tracks

G-Eazy had a big 2014 between his debut album and touring, yet the hustle doesn't stop as he released two new tracks called "Why Thank You" produced by Hit-Boy and "Show You the World" featuring Too $hort and produced by Christoph Andersson. Crazy to think how far the Bay area rapper has come in the years, but his grind doesn't seem to be slowing down in 2015. Stream both tacks below and get a free download of "Why Thank You."

Bondax - "Dusk Funk"

The British production pair known as Bondax made quite an impression in 2014, but I think it is 2015 where they will become more of a recognized name, especially in the states. The duo released a new song called "Dusk Funk," which you can find on Bondax & Friends: The Mix Album, which was released on iTunes featuring 25 tracks. This is one of those singles that will get you moving and ready to party for the New Year.

John Walt - "Pineapple Wildwood"

There is a hip hop collective out of Chicago called PIVOT Gang and one of the members John Walt, has a new track called "Pineapple Wildwood." produced by fellow member Saba. While the mainly hip hop beat stands out, we find the rapper actually singing with more a soul sound that snags your attention right from the start. Walt will drop his debut project in 2015, but until then you can enjoy this track below.

Mr. Carmack – "Love Loving You in 3/4"

Hawaiian producer Mr. Carmack has been a constant feature on here for awhile now, but his music always has a versatile sound, so it's only fair I stay up to date with his material. The latest release is a song called "Love Loving You in 3/4," which is sort of on the experimental and psychedelic side of electronic. He's proven his hip hop and trap abilities, but he also shows us his skills in making a more relaxing and soulful vibe. Give it a spin below.

Diplo - "Revolution" (Unlike Pluto Remix)

Well, I know it has been a bit since I posted, but DJ/producer Unlike Pluto shared a excellent remix of Diplo's "Revolution" that I had to sneak in on this Saturday. Now, it is hard to tackle an electronic/dance tune from Diplo, but the Atlanta native found a clever way to amplify this tune a bit more.

He kept the original vocals and feel, but threw in some new drops that aren't too harsh, yet still keep the party going. This guy has been a versatile talent since I first got music from him and he keeps getting better. Stream and download below.

Apache Prophet - If He Dies He Dies 2 [Overlooked Mixtape of 2014]

At the rate of the speed of light that music seems to come out anymore, it's easy to overlook tons of great albums and mixtapes in a year, especially DIY ones hyped up only by the artist himself. Such is the case with one of my favorite mixtapes of 2014 If He Dies He Dies 2 by the 21-year-old rapper Apache Prophet, real name Mikahil White.

Back in 2013 when I started following Prophet on twitter I didn't pay too much attention to him, but I did notice his intelligence and the way he talked about his music with passion. I see a lot of people on social media hyping up their music and talking about the struggles of being an artist everyday, but something about this dude seemed different. For one, he was very eloquent with words when he wanted to be, even if he cracked jokes about rap, sports and video games most of the time. He also seemed like he had a story to tell.

It wasn't until I heard the first If He Dies He Dies back in January that I realized how right I was. That first tape made me an instant fan. Over 17 excellent beats, I was brought into the world of Prophet--a world of real life loss, struggle, pain, ambition, drugs, alcohol, and yes, Naruto. The most notable thing about his music is that there are no party tracks, just music that deals with real life drama. Emotions are not held back and replaced with braggadocio. That being said, these tracks still bang, and, most importantly, he can rap his ass off.

Now that the introduction is out of the way, let me get into the subject at hand: the excellent If He Dies He Dies 2. Here's when we really get to hear the story that Mikahil has to tell. And it's not an easy one. (From this point forward I will refer to this mixtape as an album because that's a better description anyway, and I will refer to Prophet as Mikahil because this is his real life story. The following quotes are excerpts from an email interview I did with him.)

The album was made for the purpose of being played at the eulogy of one of Mikahil's closest friends, Annalisa Frei. She lost her life to gang violence two years back and it's taken her parents until this year to have the service. Mikahil was not only there that night, but he held her as she died. Not only this, but Mikahil, being once gang-affiliated, expels a tremendous amount of guilt on the album over her death because it resulted as an altercation between old friends of his.

After Annalisa's death, Mikahil and his three brothers quit their gang-ties. Sadly, more tragedy followed as his older brother Ricky lost his life due to his decision to break ties. "Things were different back then. Loyalty was taken very seriously," Mikahil told me. As anyone would, Mikahil struggled tremendously with these sudden losses, and turned to alcoholism and other reckless habits which he references in the album. "I dealt with things how I dealt with them. Not too proud of it and I still have a few issues dealing with it I guess."

If He Dies He Dies 2 is a journey from beginning to end, each song playing a crucial role in the telling of this powerful story. Throughout the course of the album, we see Mikahil at his lowest and darkest moments dealing with the tragic cards life has dealt him and eventually coming to terms with his past and finding happiness again. It's an epic tale of love lost and gained--love of a brother, a mother, a family, a friend, and finding that true love connection with your Queen even while you are haunted by the ghost of someone else. In the end, Mikahil discovers that sometimes we need someone to save us, even while we are the fearless guardians of our family and friends. A ninja can take many paths, but in the end, the right one will present itself and we can look back with no regrets. (You'll understand the Naruto references once you've listened to the whole album.)

Along the way, Mikahil uses his experiences in a positive way to shine much needed light on the darkest of subjects like gang violence, drug dealing, and police brutality that still destroy african-american lives and communities all over America. And on the track "Who Are You?" especially, Mikahil, with some nice help from a young man billed only as "Justin The Joyful", illuminates the bigger picture of the system that is steering african-americans, our entire human family, and the earth itself in the wrong direction.

I know this article is late, but your 2014 music consciousness will not be complete without hearing this album. So happy holidays! This is my gift to you my fellow music lovers. Listen below and download the album at any price you choose (including $0). Peace.

The Weeknd - "Earned It" (Fifty Shades of Grey)

The Weeknd has returned with a brilliant new tune called "Earned It" for the upcoming movie soundtrack for Fifty Shades of Grey. The movie has gained a ton of attention in recent weeks, so this is a really good look to expand The Weeknd's fan base. On this one, the Toronto crooner sings over an orchestral instrumental and really proves to the world what kind of singing chops he has. I dig this kind of instrumental for him and hope he gets on more songs like this. Stream the song below.

Been a little while since I posted something from DJ/production duo Solidisco, but the pair released a short 3 track EP called Ready Look Choose just the other day. Young electronic producer XXYYXX tends to disappear for a bit, which is most likely him working on tunes, like this new remix of Ryan Hemsworth and Dawn Golden's "Snow In Newark." The original can be found on Hemsworth debut album, but here we find XXYYXX mellowing it out and twisting up the vocal work slightly. Listen below.

Beau Young Prince - "Don't Let This Moment Fade"

I've been posting Beau Young Prince for awhile now, but you might of noticed he's been a bit quiet as of lately since his tape, The Groovy God. Yet, he dropped a new tune called "Don't Let This Moment Fade" just a couple days ago. When it comes to hip hop, Beau is certainly a more unique artist with his hippie perspective and approach to music.

Yet, while some might view him as a bit strange, don't dismiss him because he is an interesting artist to keep tabs on and he genuinely makes good music. The production is originally from Obeson, which he ripped so he can add his spin to it. Peep it below.

This is taking music and creativity to the next level and I always dig when artists push the boundaries a bit. Stream the tune below.

For awhile now there has been big talk of singer D'Angelo returning with a new album after a long hiatus. However, it did not seem to be coming although he had performed a few times last year, but now that talk seems to becoming a reality. He released a new song called "Sugah Daddy" with his collab band The Vanguard.

The tune has a classic soul sound to it and D'Angelo doesn't sound like he has missed a single step and picked up right where he left off. Stream the track below and stayed tune for more music, hopefully soon.

BANKS – "Beggin For Thread" (Salva Remix)

LA singer/songwriter BANKS had one of the best albums of 2014 and her unique sound gets a bit more entertaining thanks to the electronic/trap remix of  "Beggin For Thread" from Salva. He of course got that nod of approval from the songstress herself so you know she is digging this. The remix keeps the vocal hook intact and flips some nice hand-claps, haunting electronics, and thunderous bass around it. You can either bump this loudly in your car or rage out in a club to. A few days ago he released the title track out and now there is the video as well. This tune is more on the acoustic side, but this allows for the lyrics and emotion in his voice to shine through. Give it a peep below.

J. Cole – 2014 Forest Hills Drive (Album Stream)

J. Cole has always been a hip hop artist I truly respected and I think with his forthcoming album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, more people will finally get on board. The record is out next week December 9th, but it has been put out for streaming right now. One thing you might notice right away is that this album has no features and is all J. Cole, which off the bat I'm totally for. You might want to save some room on your top albums of 2014 list, because Jermaine has something special here.

We already know Norwegian producer Kygo creates some ridiculously good remixes, but now we have an original single called "Firestone" that proves he can chop up his own material too. This song features vocals from Conrad and keeps those warm vibes rolling through. You could hear this one the radio, yet it doesn't have that typical mainstream vibe either that might deter some of you music snobs away. This is just more proof why Kygo is dope.

Philadelphia natives Marian Hill released a new electronic-pop tune called "Lips." The track is featured on the duo’s AA-Side 7” release, out today via B3SCI Records. The pair has gotten plenty of attention recently, racking up some serious plays on Spotify and Hype Machine, but it helps that they have a more unique sound and style to their brand of electronic as well. Yet again, Alt-R&B crooner JMSN releases another solid tune, this one called "Addicted." This will be on his forthcoming self-titled record, which is due out December 9th. He has constantly released solid music, but still has yet to blow up to the mainstream. Whether that is good or bad, he definitely deserves more recognition for his work.

While I was basically absent from the web the last few days and after I tweeted about wanting some new music from Frank Ocean, the R&B crooner actually had uploaded a track called "Memrise" to his Tumblr. The tune certainly is pretty legit, but I have a feeling this isn't really a full track and more of a teaser if you will. It clocks under 2 minutes and seems like one of those interludes that albums can have, but this is still exciting because this hints at new music and album, which has been a long time coming.
